My South-Facing Garden Is Too Hot

Why This Happens

A south-facing garden gets the most consistent sun of any orientation — the sun tracks across it for
most of the day rather than only catching it in the morning or evening. That’s usually why people love the
garden in the first place, but it also means there’s very little natural relief from direct sun during the
hottest months, especially around midday and early afternoon when the sun is highest and most intense.

Because the sun is overhead for longer, a south-facing garden generally needs more shade coverage —
and often a deeper projection — than an east- or west-facing one, where the sun only hits at an angle for
part of the day.

What Actually Suits This Problem

1

Create a genuine shaded zone on the patio or seating area

A fabric cassette awning such as the Weinor Semina Life, Weinor Cassita II, or Opal Design II can project several metres out from the house, giving enough depth of shade to keep a seating or dining area usable through the middle of the day rather than just at the edges.

2

Want to use the space whatever the weather, not just when it's sunny

The Weinor PergoTex II, Plaza Viva, or Sottezza II provide a retractable solid roof, making them particularly well suited to a south-facing garden where the shaded space is likely to be used regularly throughout the summer rather than just occasionally.

3

The heat is also coming through patio doors or windows on the south elevation

This is worth mentioning at survey, since the solution may need to cover the glazing itself as well as the seating area. We can advise on this together rather than treating the garden and the house as separate problems.

What We'd Need To Know

How much of the garden you actually want shaded — and for how much of the day — plays a major role in determining which projection and awning model is most suitable. A deeper projection provides a larger shaded area but also increases the cost, so it's important to consider whether you need shade for a small dining table or a much larger outdoor living space. We'll always recommend a solution based on how you genuinely intend to use the area, rather than simply suggesting the largest option available.
